Savage Apes of Mars by Frank Frazetta (1970).
From Academy Award–winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes “John Carter” — a sweeping action — adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom - it would be kind of hilarious/awesome if Dejah Thoris was inducted into the pantheon and started showing up on lunchboxes with the Little Mermaid.

If you wondered where James Cameron inspiration came from for the many limbed creatures of Avatar’s Pandora, then arguably it was Edgar Rice Burroughs John Carter Mars series. Burroughs called Mars Barsoom in his books.
Most of Burrough’s Barsoom creatures are roughly equivalent to those found on Earth. Though in general, most seem to have multiple legs and all are egg-laying.
Burroughs concept of a dying Mars and the Martian canals follows the theories Percival Lowell and his predecessor Giovanni Schiaparelli.
Barsoom, Burroughs’ Mars inspired many Scientists and Writers, Carl Sagan and for two decades, a map of the planet, as imagined by Burroughs, hung in the hallway outside of Sagan’s office in Cornell University. Ray Bradbury and Arthur C. Clarke both acknowledged the lasting influence of the Mars Series.
Taylor Kitsch will be playing John Carter
Edgar Rice Burroughs describes his character and courtesy exemplify the ideals of the antebellum South. A Virginian, he served as a captain in the American Civil War on the side of the Confederacy. He strikes it rich by finding gold in Arizona after the end of hostilities. While hiding from Apaches in a cave, he seemingly dies, and leaving his inanimate body behind is mysteriously transported by a form of astral projection to the planet Mars, where he finds himself re-embodied in a form identical to his earthly one
Accustomed to the greater gravity of Earth, he is much stronger than the natives of Mars.
If this characteristic sounds familiar it should, Jerry Siegel who created Superman noted that John Carter along with Burroughs more famous creation Tarzan, were key inspirations for the Last Son of Krypton, whose superpowers were originally a result of Krypton having greater gravity than Earth.
