While the basic assumption in the Superman books for five decades was that Superman didn’t want to marry Lois Lane, he had his reasons.
Over the years the emphasis would shift between them, making one more important than another, but invariably it was a combination of these that kept the Man of Steel single.
Reason One is shown here. Superman’s powers were considered an obstacle to any union with an ordinary human being. This trope would be used in Ilya Salkind’s 1980 film Superman II which concluded with Lois and Superman recognising they could not be together.
On the other hand Supergirl - as a concept - was tested as a Romantic partner for Superman ( in Superman #123 August 1958 ) Ilya Salkind intended the third of his Superman Series of films to include an unrelated Kryptonian Supergirl as Superman’s love Interest.
