In the original classic Superman #129 (May 1959) story introducing Lori Lemaris which John Bryne very closely followed in his version in Superman (volume 2) #12 we see starkly underlined the classic dynamic.
In Superman (volume 2) #12
Bryne writes Lori later as saying
Well I can’t say it’s a powerful endorsement - I mean look at the kiss that follows. As the bard would say “me thinks the lady doth protest to much” and the “Forever” makes the same true for Superman. Never say never in comics.
Of course John Bryne didn’t think Superman and Lois worked, and preferred Lana Lang. But even if we take the single panel on the left out of context with one on the right - which is a pale imitation IMO of the classic silver age DCU - the fact remains Superman loved Lori enough to propose after 3 months and share with her the truth. Something he did NOT do with Lois Lane for YEARS.
I simply don’t see the romance in that level of distrust.
And of course Lori was not unique in quickly gaining Superman’s trust in Bryne’s writing. Superman confided in Diana/Wonder Woman after one date!
